My writing work is often inspired by my own life experiences. from growing up queer to working in hospitality, everything has the potential to become a compelling story. my connection to my identity and rural hometown colour the settings and characters present in my work.
The Way You Were Born (2025)
A short story about a young boy who grows up, goes to school, and makes friends. But there's something different about him. This difference helps and hinders him on his way through life.
"She stared at the stickers with something creasing in her forehead. When I wasn’t looking, she stared at me, but I could see her out of the corner of my eye. I could see her furrowed brow, and the brightness of tears in her eyes."
Keep An Eye Out (2024)
A short story about two friends admiring the scenery in a deeply changed world.
"My eyes are scrunched shut, and when I open them, I am at the top of a pile of red
dirt, I look down at my battered sandshoes and shift my feet, it crumbles and chunks of it slide down to the ground. Its high up, maybe 4 or 5 meters, left over from an abandoned construction project. If I slipped, I’d be in for some strife, but I look to the side and he’s holding me in place, his soft curly hair whips in the wind and he grins at me, showing his teeth, all crooked 32 of them. He doesn’t seem worried about his white Air Forces, slowly turning orange as they become caked in dirt, though I guess he would’ve given up on them a while ago."
Wolf Girls and Human Hatstands: The Performativity of the Feminine Identity (2024)
A research essay focusing on varying representations of the female identity through art and pop culture, acknowledging the performative nature and construction of our identities as women.
"Acknowledging that traditional femininity is constructed, like all
identities, opens us up to a diverse array of interpretations and presentations of womanhood, outside the gaze of men and as people instead of objects, mothers, or servants. Because for some who are blinded by tradition, to see a woman who is not any of those things, is to see a bird fly backwards."
Tough Customer (2024)
A short story detailing an altercation between a service worker and a particularly rude customer.
"give it my best smile. As if in return it produces a wallet, throwing me one last glance before unzipping the coin pouch and dumping a metric tonne of silvers onto the counter.
“Gotta get rid of them somehow.” It laughs like the sound of squealing tires from a
reckless burnout. With one shrivelled finger it slides the coins across the counter. Each time a scrape, scrape, scrape on the speckled laminate, ringing through the empty shop. It counts slowly as it goes.
“Twenty… twenty-five…”
Canine Concerns (2023)
A series of prose poems analysing canines and their roles in our lives.
"Coyote, keening, stealing cats for dinner, you creep into the American dream and rip it all apart, I don’t blame you for taking Mr. Whiskers, I’m sure he was delicious, and the take, take, take, is all you’ve ever known. You’re sound is like alarm bells and we lock our loved ones inside, peek through the curtains and wonder, who are you after tonight?"
